Choose Your Foundation (Timber Specification)
Designing a truly bespoke floor starts with the right foundation. From the structure and scale of your boards to their core composition, every detail plays a role in how your floor performs and feels. At Bespoke Timber Coatings, we offer expert guidance to help you personalise the key timber specifications—ensuring your floor not only looks incredible but functions perfectly in your space.

Board Thickness & Construction
Options include:
12mm / 14mm / 15mm / 20mm overall thickness
3mm / 4mm / 6mm hardwood lamella (top layer) Thicker boards with larger lamellas allow for more sanding over time and typically offer a longer lifespan. Our multi-layer construction ensures excellent dimensional stability—perfect for New Zealand’s varied climate. Lighter options like 12mm are ideal for underfloor heating or areas with height restrictions.

Board Width & Length
Options include:
Widths: 130mm to 300mm
Lengths: Up to 3,000mm
The width and length of your planks significantly impact the overall look of your space. Narrow boards evoke a classic, traditional aesthetic, while wider planks feel modern and showcase more of the timber’s natural grain. Longer lengths reduce joins and create a seamless, expansive feel—ideal for open-plan living.

Grade Selection
Decide how much character you want.
Timber grade refers to the natural features of the wood—like knots, colour variation, and grain pattern.
Prime Grade (AB/ABC): Clean, uniform appearance with minimal knots
Feature Grade (ABCD) : Balanced mix of character and consistency
Rustic Grade: Bold natural features, with knots and variation
Why it matters:
Choosing the right grade sets the tone of the floor. Prime feels sleek and contemporary, while Rustic brings warmth and organic texture to more relaxed or heritage-style interiors.

Texure
Bring the timber to life.
Texture adds depth, feel, and visual interest to your floor. It can also help disguise wear and give a sense of age or softness.
Light
Brush
Heavy Brush - Accentuates grain with subtle depth
Band-sawn: Adds a rustic, handcrafted feel
Circular Sawn - : Adds a rustic, handcrafted feel
Hand-scraped: Creates a lived-in, aged look
Why it matters:
Textures can influence how light interacts with your floor and how forgiving it is to daily wear. For high-traffic areas, textures like brushed or band-sawn can reduce visible marks.

Finish & Sheen
Make it uniquely yours.
This is where the artistry happens. We offer an unlimited colour palette, developed through layering techniques, reactive stains, and custom tinting—so you’re never limited by what’s “off the shelf.”

Finish & Sheen
The right finish brings out the beauty of your timber while also offering long-term protection, ease of maintenance, and performance tailored to your lifestyle. At Bespoke Timber Coatings, we only use the highest quality finishes—each carefully selected for its aesthetic, durability, and practicality. From the natural warmth of hardwax oil to the durability of UV-cured lacquer, we help you choose the option that best suits your space.
Sheen level also plays a vital role in the final look and feel of your floor. Whether you prefer the velvety softness of ultra-matt or a subtle satin glow, your chosen sheen can enhance the timber’s tone, add depth, and affect how light plays across the surface.

Both Hardwax Oil and UV Lacquer offer exceptional protection when professionally applied. The best option for your project depends on your lifestyle, environment, and design preferences. Our team at Bespoke Timber Coatings will help guide you through this decision.
Why It Matters Finish impacts far more than appearance—it also affects durability, repairability, and how your floor feels underfoot. UV lacquer offers higher performance with lower maintenance, while hardwax oil brings a soft, natural look and can be spot-repaired over time.
Sheen Levels Choose from a range of sheen options to fine-tune the visual impact of your floor:
Ultra-Matt: Soft, natural, and low-reflective—ideal for a modern, understated finish.
Matt: Subtle and slightly soft with a hint of reflection. A popular choice for contemporary spaces.
Satin: Offers a smooth finish with added sheen and greater clarity in the wood’s grain.
Gloss: A high-shine option that reflects light dramatically—great for formal settings, but may show marks more easily.
Why It Matters Each sheen level offers a distinct aesthetic and feel. Consider lighting, usage, and interior design goals when choosing the right level of shine for your space.
The Bespoke Process
