Designing a truly bespoke floor is about more than colour. It’s about carefully choosing the right timber, structure, dimensions, texture, and finish to suit how you live and the look you love. At Bespoke Timber Coatings, we make it easy to personalise every detail, with expert guidance along the way.

Options include:
– 12mm / 14mm / 15mm / 20mm overall thickness
– 3mm / 4mm / 6mm hardwood lamella (top layer)

Why it matters:
Thicker boards with larger lamellas allow for more sanding and longer life. Multi-layer construction offers excellent dimensional stability—ideal for New Zealand’s varied climate. Lighter options (like 12mm) are well-suited to underfloor heating, where floor height needs to be minimised or there are budget restraints.

Width & Length

Board Size

Set the scale.
The size of your plank dramatically influences the aesthetic of your space.

Options include:
– Widths: 130mm to 300mm
– Lengths: Up to 3,000mm

Why it matters:
Narrow planks create a traditional, classic look. Wide planks feel more modern and luxurious, showcasing more of the timber’s natural grain. Longer lengths reduce joins and create visual flow, especially in open-plan spaces.

Grade Selection

Grade

Decide how much character you want.
Timber grade refers to the natural features of the wood—like knots, colour variation, and grain pattern.

Prime Grade (AB/ABC): Clean, uniform appearance with minimal knots

Feature Grade (ABCD) : Balanced mix of character and consistency

Rustic Grade: Bold natural features, with knots and variation

Why it matters:
Choosing the right grade sets the tone of the floor. Prime feels sleek and contemporary, while Rustic brings warmth and organic texture to more relaxed or heritage-style interiors.

Surface Texture

Texture

Bring the timber to life.
Texture adds depth, feel, and visual interest to your floor. It can also help disguise wear and give a sense of age or softness.

Light
Brush

Heavy Brush - Accentuates grain with subtle depth

Band-sawn: Adds a rustic, handcrafted feel

Circular Sawn - : Adds a rustic, handcrafted feel

Hand-scraped: Creates a lived-in, aged look

Why it matters:
Textures can influence how light interacts with your floor and how forgiving it is to daily wear. For high-traffic areas, textures like brushed or band-sawn can reduce visible marks.

Colour

Colour

Make it uniquely yours.
This is where the artistry happens. We offer an unlimited colour palette, developed through layering techniques, reactive stains, and custom tinting—so you’re never limited by what’s “off the shelf.”

Finish

Finish

We use only the highest quality finishes available—each one carefully selected for its performance, beauty, and durability. While all of our finish options meet the same premium standard, they each offer unique characteristics in terms of look, feel, and maintenance.

From the natural depth of hardwax oils to the long-lasting protection of UV-cured lacquers, every finish has its own strengths. Understanding how each one performs, how to care for it, and what it brings to your space is key to making the right choice. We’re here to guide you through the options so your floor not only looks exceptional but also fits seamlessly into your lifestyle.

Both Hardwax Oil and UV Lacquer offer excellent protection for your engineered timber floors when applied professionally. The best choice hinges on your priorities regarding aesthetics, feel, durability, and maintenance commitment. Our team at Bespoke Timber Coatings can discuss your specific needs and help you select the perfect finish during your consultation.

Why it matters:
The finish not only determines the final appearance, but also affects durability, maintenance, and feel underfoot. UV lacquer offers high performance with low maintenance. Hardwax oil brings a soft, natural look and can be spot-repaired over time.

Sheen

Sheen

The sheen of your finish plays a big role in both the look and feel of your floor. We offer a range of sheen options—from ultra-matt to gloss—so you can fine-tune the final appearance to suit your style.

  • Ultra-Matt: Soft, natural, and low-reflective—ideal for a raw timber look with a modern, understated finish.
  • Matt: Subtle and elegant, with just a hint of reflection. A popular choice for contemporary spaces.
  • Satin: Offers a smooth, slightly reflective surface that enhances grain detail while remaining easy to maintain.
  • Gloss: A high-shine, polished look that adds richness and drama—best suited for formal or feature spaces.

Each sheen level brings a different visual impact and wear perception, so it’s worth considering how light, space, and usage will interact with your floor.

The Bespoke Process

Once you’ve selected your preferred specifications, we’ll create a physical sample for review. You can tweak the colour, sheen, or texture until it’s exactly right. From there, your boards are expertly coated with care, consistency, and craftsmanship.
