Oiled Finish
There is nothing more beautiful than an oiled timber floor. The oil accentuates the timber grain and offers a 2-dimensional effect. There is a huge range of colour options and it feels amazing underfoot.
An oiled floor requires more extensive maintenance than a polyurethane floor. This varies greatly between different products. At Bespoke Timber Coatings we are continuously researching to ensure we are giving you all the options and will always recommend the very best products available.
We also always include a maintenance guide with each floor so that you understand the best way to keep your floor looking beautiful.
Waterborne Polyurethane
Waterborne Polyurethane Timber Floors provide a stunning finish and far superior durability to an oiled floor. They have a lighter appearance than traditional solvent-based finishes.
We use only the best waterborne products available, being certain they offer exceptional durability whilst also being safe to apply and live on. Having worked for many years with the Bona brand we have an in-depth knowledge of many of the options on hand.
You can choose the sheen level that you would like with a Polyurethane floor. Finishes like Loba Invisible create an absolute no sheen finish providing the look of an oiled finish but the durability of polyurethane, this is a popular alternative to oil. There are also options for Extra Matt, Matt and Silk Matt depending on personal preference.
There are many colour options with a polyurethane finish with different primers providing a soft effect, as well as a full range of stains and oils that can be overcoated.
Hard Wax Oil
Similar to the traditional oiled finish, hard wax oil incorporates a wax element that increases the water resistance and sheen of other oils. Hardwax oil offers massive benefits including a lifetime of great looking wood if the coat is maintained properly.
Boasting a matte appearance, you can keep the texture of your flooring very natural and full of character. Hard wax oil soaks into the timber, providing a strengthening benefit and repelling water efficiently.
Hard wax oil is dirt-resistant and highly durable with little risk of cracking over time, making it a great option for flooring, even in high-traffic areas. Spot touch-ups are easy to apply and blend with the surrounding floor.
Oiled finishes are also compatible with underfloor heating, if you’re lucky enough to have it, and are easy to clean and maintain even for homeowners.

While it looks amazing with proper maintenance, you will need to apply a maintenance coat in 2-5 years depending on wear - dont stress too much, this is an easy and economic process
Hard wax floors require more frequent cleaning with specific soaps to keep its sheen.
Not as hard-wearing as polyurethane.
POLYURETHANE
We use non-toxic polyurethane products, so it is safe for our team to use during application.

Easy to clean and water-resistant
Easily the most durable floor finish available
You can’t change your mind and coat an oil-based finish over a water-based polyurethane coating.
Touch up patches are difficult to blend with the surrounding areas and will most likely need a professional to do it.
Over time, the scuffs and scratches can only be fixed with a recoat. Recoats look best once every ten years or so, depending on how much traffic uses the floor.

Bona Craft Oil 2k is a unique blend of different vegetable oils, modified for superior impregnation and long-lasting protection of wooden floors. The exclusive blend is low in odour, easy to handle and gives a reduced yellowing effect.
Bon Craft Oil formulation is environmentally responsible, containing much oil and little solvents (<4%) which also means that the wood can be saturated with fewer applications. Suitable for wooden floors in public and domestic environments as well as for furniture and other woodwork.
